Passive vs. active

In active:
Person/thing does the action

In passive:
Person/thing does not do anything

Slide 10 - Slide

In het Nederlands:
Active sentence --> actieve/bedrijvende zin
Passive sentence --> passieve/lijdende zin

De leerlingen plagen de docent.
De docent wordt geplaagd (door de leerlingen).

Slide 11 - Slide

Wanneer gebruik je de passive?
De passive wordt gebruikt als de nadruk niet ligt op wie iets doet, maar wel op wat er gedaan wordt. De handeling is belangrijker dan degene die het doet. Of: je weet helemaal niet wie het doet. Bijvoorbeeld:

The package was delivered yesterday. (het doet er niet toe door wie).
My bike has been stolen. (je weet niet door wie)

Slide 12 - Slide

Hoe maak je de passive?
De passive bestaat uit:
vorm van 'to be' + voltooid deelwoord

The rules are written on the board (by the teacher).
The song was played three times (by the dj).
The wall has been painted green (by my dad).

Slide 13 - Slide

Voltooid deelwoord:
  • regelmatige ww:  hele ww + ed   (play  -->  played)
  • onregelmatige ww: 3e vorm   (fly  --> flew)

Slide 14 - Slide

Hoe herken je een passive?
  1. Staat er een vorm van 'to be'?
    (am/are/is/was/were/have been/ has been/ had been/is being/etc.)
  2. Staat daarna een voltooid deelwoord? (played, broken etc.)
  3. Staat daarna 'by ....'? Zoniet, kun je 'by zombies' erachter
    zetten?
Als aan deze 3 voldaan is  -->  het is een passive!
The poor girl was killed (by zombies).

Slide 15 - Slide

Present Simple Passive:

am/are/is + voltooid deelwoord
Active:
A lot of people speak English.
Passive:
English is spoken by a lot of people.

Past Simple Passive:

was/were + voltooid deelwoord
Active:
Rosa ate all the cookies.
Passive:
All the cookies were eaten by Rosa.

  • Question

Slide 17 - Slide

  • Sometimes you will see "by ..."
  • This indicates who did the action of course
