The Amazon rainforest gives us oxygen to breathe.

The Amazon rainforest has many rare plants which we use for medicine.  Worldwide there are over 3,000 plants that are used to help to treat cancer.  70% of those plants are only found in the rainforests.

The Amazon is home to between 400-500 indigenous tribes who have a right to live in peace.

What does deforestation mean?
It is when trees are cut down and areas of the rainforest are cleared to be used for other things.

The main reason for cutting down the rainforest is for cattle ranchers to create farmland.

Farmers graze cows on the land to sell as beef and for burgers.

Slide 11 - Slide

McDonald's and Burger King have both bought cattle from deforested Amazon land to make their burgers in the past.

Farmers also plant soybeans on the deforested land, which they can sell for a profit.

Logging is another big business in the Amazon.
Trees are cut down for wood.

Trees are also cut down so that coca plants to produce cocaine can be grown.

The coca farms and many of the loggers are illegal and, when there have been protests, the people running them have killed some of the local tribes people.

Gold mines are also expanding in the Amazon and all these things require roads to be built so that lorries can move in and out.

The people who are cutting down the rainforest say that they need the money to feed their families.  They cannot afford to worry about the rest of the world.
