The passive 

to be + voltooid deelwoord

Yesterday, I was defeated by my brother.

The Passive

Compare:

a. The detective is questioning the suspect right now. 

b. The suspect is being questioned (by the detective).

Active - passive

The thief breaks the glass

present simple

           The glass is broken (by the thief)

 to be + voltooid deelwoord, nadruk op actie niet op dader!

How to recognize a passive sentence...

- Check if there is a form of 'to be' used (am, are, is, was, were, been)

- Is it followed by a participle?

- Is it followed by 'by + noun or pronoun? If not, can it be followed by  'by zombies'?

Are all answers 'yes'? Congratulations, you have a passive sentence.

For, since - present perfect

Wanneer er twee acties in het verleden plaatsvinden, gebruik je voor de actie die het verst in het verleden ligt de past perfect.

Jim had been given his presents before they congratulated him on his birthday.
