Let's do this...
We're going to read a complex text in French, but in a very structured way... Follow these steps:

  1. Skim the text for gist, and write an appropriate title.
  2. Scan the text and annotate the text with words that you do know (ignore the ones you don't!)
  3. Scan the text again, and answer the questions on the following slides. Focus on words you know, images, context, and what's around the words you don't know in order to decipher the meaning. (See UNLOCK THE CODE)
  4. Summarise the text in no more than 20 words! (remember a summary doesn't contain specific details - ask yourself, what would I tell my parents I read about in French today?)

For step 3:

Do the first question together as an example, getting the students to rephrase the vocabulary from the question in their answer. 

This encourages them to write in full sentences, and further work with the strategies. 

For example, with the question Que désigne aujourd'hui le terme "francophonie"? students can't figure out the meaning of désigne, but they know the rest of the sentence because of prior learning or cognates. They firstly have to translate what they do know into their best language, and then from there figure out the grammatical role of the word (here it's a verb). They then have to say the sentence to themselves, and figure out the meaning of the blank word based on the context. Get them to ask themselves: what would make most sense here??
