Past simple: What does it look like and when is it used (werkwoord)?

Past simple

Something that started and finished in the past.

Past perfect: What does it look like and when is it used?

Past perfect

had + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

• Used to indicate that something happened before another past incident. (Past perfect is the oldest thing) 

He left for school after he had eaten his breakfast.

Present perfect: What does it look like and when is it used?

Present perfect

Has/Have + past participle (voltooid deelwoord)

• Something that started and finished in past and has something to do with now. 
• Experiences up to the present
• Focused on result or how many times something has happened

Present perfect continuous: What does it look like and when is it used?

Present perfect continuous

has/have + been + verb+ing

I have been studying French in my spare time. 

• Something that started in the past and is still going on (it might carry on into the future as well)
• Focus is on how long something has been in progress

Past continuous: What does it look like and when is it used?

Past continuous

was / were  +  verb+ing

Vince was watching a horror film when he heard a bang from the kitchen.

• Something that started and finished in the past but was in progess in that period.
