Words ending on an -s sound

We use the present simple when...

• ...we talk about habits, routines, and timetables.

The bus leaves at 2 p.m.

• ...we talk about facts or situations in the present.

When:

1. When something is happening right now.
2. When something is happening in the near future.

Signal words:

1. Right now; now; at the moment; etc...
2. Today; this evening; this afternoon; etc...

Present continuous affirmative

How:

am/is/are + verb + ing

I am playing a game with my friend.

Anouk is training with the cheerleaders today.

We are learning English right now.

Present continuous negative

How:

am/is/are + not + verb + ing

Examples (-)

I am not doing well in English class.

Lars is not watching a movie this afternoon.

They are not doing well in P.E.

Present continuous questions

How:

am/is/are + subject + verb + ing

Present continuous spelling

1. Basic rule = walk -> walking
2.  Words ending on -e = live -> living
3. Words ending on -ie = lie -> lying
4. Words ending on one -l = travel -> travelling
5. Short words ending on a vowel + consonant = swim -> swimming
6. Words ending on a vowel + consonant, with emphasis on the last syllable = begin -> beginning
