Past simple vs Past continuous
Als je moet kiezen
Past simple gebruik je voor:
- Afgeronde handelingen/gebeurtenissen op een bepaald moment in het verleden.
(signaalwoorden: yesterday, last week, when I was six years old etc.)

Past Continuous:
- Als je moet zeggen dat iets of iemand een tijdje (een langere periode) iets aan het doen
   was/waren in het verleden.

Moet je beiden in 1 zin gebruiken dan:
  • Past simple voor de korte gebeurtenis/onderbreking.
  • Past continuous voor de lange gebeurtenis.

Guessing the meaning of words
Remember? 'false friends': English words similar to Dutch words with a different meaning.

But...Many words do mean what you think they mean e.g.:
  • landscape- landschap,
  • rucksack - rugzak.
  • fatal - fataal
  • actual - actueel

TIP: Use your knowledge of Dutch to guess the meaning of English words.

Slide 22 - Slide

Quoting from a text
Sometimes you are asked to do so in a reading exercise or test.
RULES

  • Start with quotation marks:
      'and' or "and".
  • Write down the first two and the last two word of the fragment, separated by three dots:
       'and he....so then'
  • add line numbers where you found the quote in brackets.
       'There was....left alone' (line 6 - 8)

Game of Thrones News
‘We’ve Never Read the Books’

Dutch Game of Thrones actress Carice van Houten, who plays Melisandre in the popular fantasy series, says that the debate whether the show should stick more closely to the books is irrelevant for most of the cast. ‘We’ve never read the books,’ she explains.

The series, based on the bestselling novels by George R.R. Martin, tells a gripping story of seven kingdoms and royals competing for the Iron Throne. The often bloody tale has captured the imagination of people all over the world.

There are plenty of surprises in the TV series, and some of the recent changes have raised questions whether the show is becoming too far removed from the books.
