Remember
  • Speak in full sentences: My name is..... (Not just 'Derek')
  • CAE: Parts 1 & 2 are individual / parts 3 & 4 your work together.
  • Make sure you speak enough, but that you also give your partner a chance to speak.
  • Dead air is a crime.
  • Check the classroom for the presentation with tips & tricks

Part 1
  • Part 1 of CAE is a brief interview between the candidates and the examiner, which lasts for 2 minutes
  • The examiner asks a few relatively simple questions about everyday topics.
  • The first impression: polite & full answers

Slide 7 - Slide

Part 2
  • Describing pictures
  • In part 2, you have to speak for one minute about 2 out of 3 pictures provided while answering 2 questions about the pictures.
  • There is also a follow-up question about your partner’s pictures after they speak.
  • Your individual task this exam, so: stay organised, connect your ideas together and try to squeeze in a few impressive bits of vocabulary.

Part 3
  • Collaboration: Discussing the wordweb
  • Move your chairs to face each other to interact
  • A diagram with a question and 5 different ideas
  • The first 2 minutes: to discuss the question using the ideas
  • A follow-up question about the most/least/best/worst option. Listen carefully to the follow-up question because it’s not written down anywhere.
  • Link your ideas to what your partner has said. Agree, disagree or expand upon their comments for higher marks.
  • The options are there as a guide, not a requirement = you don't have to discuss all of them; details are better

Part 4
  • Answering questions related to the Part 3.
  • The examiner will ask you and your partner questions, expecting you to give long, communicative and complex answers.
  • This should lead to an interesting conversation
  • The discussion lasts for 5 minutes.
