Prior knowledge
  • If you want to give somebody advice on how to stay healthy, what would you tell them to do or not to do? Give me an example sentence in English.  Start with 'you'.. 
  • This school has a strict rule which is that we ______ leave our phones in our lockers. Which words is missing?

  • Based on these three points, can you identify the differences in how 'should,' 'must,' and 'have to' are used?

Have to(moeten): gebruik je om aan te geven dat iets moet. > informeel
> Everyone has to go home by 5pm. 
> This is one of the most important questions we have to answer. 

Should (zou(den) eigenlijk moeten/ kan beter): gebruik je in adviezen. 
> You should tell your sister you're sorry.
> You should finish your homework first.

Must (moet(en) echt): gebruik je om aan te geven dat iets moet. > formeel + dwingender.
> You must be 18 years or older to use this service. 
> You must take your pills.
