Reported Speech
  • Reported speech = Indirect Speech
  • Direct Speech: 

      Something is said directly, sentence is between inverted commas "........................."


      Direct: June said, "It is my car."
      Indirect: June said that it was her car.

How does it work?
[direct speech]     ->    Debbie: "Ron, do you want another beer?"
[indirect speech] ->    She asked him if he wanted another beer.

General rule: direct --> indirect speech: "one step back in time".
Example: "We went there yesterday." --> My friends said that they had gone there yesterday.
Also possible to use with questions.
