Modal verbs 
Om aan te geven dat je iets kan, moet, mag, zou moeten, niet mag, niet kan etc. etc. gebruik je modale hulpwerkwoorden oftewel modal verbs. 

Een modal verb in zijn eentje komt niet voor: er volgt altijd een ander werkwoord op. Je mag IETS niet, je moet IETS. Dat IETS geef je aan door een ander werkwoord.

Voorbeelden:
Have to                  My mom said we have to be home by midnight.
Need to                  You need to drink water!
Be allowed to      We are not allowed to talk this train compartment.
Can                           He can speak French.
Could                      Could you tell me what time it is? 
                                   (verleden tijd & beleefde vorm van ‘Can’)
May                           May I ask you what happened.
Might                       There might be snow tomorrow.
Should                     You should give him more time
Must                          They must be tired after all that training
Ought to                 You ought to be thankful for everything I've done for you.

should: waarschijnlijk maar niet zeker
Óf een advies.

must: een stellige mening, een zeer dringend advies. 

be allowed to - regels vanuit buitenaf!

have to - moeten vanuit een persoon of jezelf, 'moeten' meer algemeen.

may - mag

might - zou ik eventueel mogen, of 'het zou misschien kunnen'

ought to - wijst vaak op een beleefdheidsregel voor iemand, zoals 'you ought to take care of her'
