Lesson 3

Genetic Crosses

Slide 1 - Slide

Learning Goals:
You can explain what hereditary traits are.
You can explain what the difference is between phenotype and genotype.
You can explain how hereditary traits are transmitted to the following generation.
You can predict what the outcome of a genetic crossing will be.

Slide 2 - Slide

This Lesson:

2. Check homework question
3. Explanation Genetic crosses & punnett squares
4. Class work: quesions 2,3 & 4 from reader

This lesson is linked to the Lesson 3 Reader (Google Classroom).

Phenotypes:  1:1  (Aa:aa)

Slide 16 - Slide

2. Using a test cross to work out genotype
We want to use the small sweet tomatoes for our nieuw tomato variety:
- We know it's phenotype = sweet!
- But what is the genotype?
- Is genotype ZZ or Zz (sweet is dominant)?

How van we test which genotype a plant has? We do a test cross using a know phenotype = homozygous recessive.
