Reading strategies

Using Prior Knowledge/Previewing

Look at the title, pictures, source and quickly scan the paragraphs. Now think of what you already know about the subject of this text. Doing this will help you to understand the text you are about to read.

 

Skim reading

 Quickly read the text to figure out what it is about. Look at things that stand out like pictures and read the first and last sentence of every paragraph. This technique can be used for questions that are about the text in general. 

Scanning

You are looking for a specific piece of information that can answer the question. You read this piece of information intensively.

Reading intensively

Read every word and make sure you understand the text.
