Julius Caesar

Ancient Rome

After Punic wars, Roman Republic conquered:

- Spain, France (Gaul) and Greece.

- Julius Caesar became a successful army commander.

- When he came back to Rome they held a triumph.

Triumph = A procession through Rome with the general dressed as a god, showing the spoils of war.

Rome enters a period of Civil wars. 

- Because a lot of army officers wanted power, money or fame. 

- Battle between 'the people' and 'the Senate'

Civil Wars = A period of fighting between several groups in Rome

Julius Caesar made use of Civil Wars by grabbing power. 

He promised the Roman citizens to solve problems. 

He called himself "dictator for life".

Senate was afraid Roman Republic was going to end. 

Caesar was stabbed to death on 15th March 44 B.C

Caesar's nephew Octavian became his successor

Octavian shared Roman Republic with Antonius.

Octavian got West.
Antonius got East.

Antonius fell in love with the queen of Egypt.

Together they wanted to conquer the Roman Republic.

Octavian defeated Antonius and held a triumph in Rome.

He got the title of 'Augustus' meaning 'the honoured one'.

 He got so many functions that he became the new emperor.
