Step 1: Review the subject to get a good overview.
Step 2: Work out the main themes and topics.
Step 3: Identify key concepts or information.
Step 4: Make brief and legible notes.
Step 5: Summarise important information.
Step 6: Use clear headings.

Step 8: Identify how topics are connected.

Step 1:
Review the subject to get a good overview.
make a timeline: what comes first, and then, and then etc...?
When and where does it take place?
Who are the main characters?
What happens (big lines, no details)

Step 2:
Work out the main themes and topics.
What are the different themes/topics of the book?
describe each theme with descriptive words
How does the theme make you feel? Are you happy, sad, angry, upset, etc.... when you read about it? Why?

Step 3:
Identify key concepts or information.
What is the story about in general?
Is there a motto or lesson to be learned?
What kind of book is it? What is the goal of the writer?

Step 4:
Make brief and legible notes.
Use sticky notes
don't write long sentences: verbs and nouns and discriptive words
print or type your notes

Step 5:
Summarise important information.
write details in order that they happen in notes
make sure to mark the most important details seperately.
Don't forget to write WHY this is important and to WHOM it is important to in the book.

Step 6:
Use clear headings.
Use sticky notes to mark the headings in the book clearly
The heading should tell you: "Who/What/Where/Why and How" in just a few words.
(example : Tom's mystery friend (John) introduced at party.)

Step 7:
Organise notes by topic.
Topics can be characters, actions that happen, periods of time, or problems in the book
be sure to note the order that they happen in the book and who is involved.
mention how long this topic is talked about in the book. (example: mentioned in chapters 1-4)

Step 8:
Identify how topics are connected.
make a mindmap and connect topics - use only key words
use discriptive words - describe what the characters see, feel, and do
use verbs to describe what they do- their role in the book

Time to get to work
work in pairs and start making notes about each step.
do this in a shared document that you can use for the coming weeks.
add to your notes as you go along

Checking what you know
Let someone ask you questions about your book
Take a look at someone else's notes- Can you understand them? Did they make the same notes as you?
Add things you've learned from your classmate's notes
