Past simple

How to form the 'past simple'?

Verb + -ed

Examples:

Work = I worked yesterday

Play = I played yesterday

Look out for these spelling rules!​

Worry > worried, not worryed.​

Stop > stopped, not stoped​

Arrive > arrived, not arriveed

Key words:

• Yesterday​
• Last week,​
• Last night​
• Two days ago​
• On Saturday​
• Last weekend​
• Etc…​

Past Simple: Questions

Bij alle werkwoorden:

Did + onderwerp + hele werkwoord

Je vervoegt dus helemaal niks!!!

Examples:

Did you go?

Did she see?

Did they find?

Past Simple: Questions

Is er een Hulpwerkwoord - Was/were of could/would

dan komen deze aan het begin.

Was your mum in Italy two weeks ago?

Could you take photos during the flight?

Stel je een WH-vraag (who, what, which, when, where, how) dan komt dit aan het begin.

Where was Jenn last Thursday?

How could they leave without their passports?

Past Simple: Negations

Bij alle werkwoorden:

Onderwerp + did not + hele werkwoord

Je vervoegt dus helemaal niks!!!!

Examples:

I did not go

He did not see

We did not find

Past Simple: Negations

Bij  was/were of would of hulpwerkwoorden zoals could en would voeg je 'not' toe.

She was not in Italy last summer.

Rick and Bo were not happy to leave France.

I could not see the Mona Lisa in Paris.

Maak een vraag:
They were in Amsterdam last week.

Maak een vraag:
I could ski ten years ago.

Fill in the correct Past Simple form:
Nancy ....... with her friends yesterday.

1. plays
2. played
3. plaied
4. did played

Choose the correct Past Simple form:
NAC ....... young PSV last week. (defeat)

1. defeat
2. defeated
3. defeats
4. defeateds

Maak een vraag:
John made lunch.

Maak een vraag:
The girl had breakfast.

Maak een ontkenning:
I ate a sandwich.

Maak ontkennend:
Daniel played in the park

Maak een ontkenning:
We went shopping.

Irregular verbs = onregelmatige ww

Examples:

I took a taxi to the airport. (take → took)

That was when we spoke. (speak → spoke)

One person gave me his last bar of chocolate. (give → gave)

Speaking activity

First write down:

• Think of an activity in the past simple (I studied English)​
• Think of a place (in my bedroom)​
• Think of a reason (because I have got an English test)​

5 minutes to prepare! Be creative and original!

Now walk around the classroom and talk to as many students as possible. Make sure you do both roles.​
