Modal verbs

Goals:

Be able to use can, could, may, might, be allowed to, be able to, have to, must, and should

Vorige week hebben we het gehad over can, could, may, might, be allowed to, en be able to. Wat weet je nog over de verschillen hiertussen?

can, could, may, might:

can, could, to be able to: (zou) kunnen

Bij een vermogen, vaardigheid, mogelijkheid:

• can  alleen tegenwoordige tijd                           I can help.
• could  bij zou kunnen of verleden tijd             I could help.
• to be able to  bij alle tijden                                   I was able to help.

can, could, may, to be allowed to: 

(zou) mogen

Bij toestemming om iets te doen:

• can  alleen tegenwoordige tijd            Can I stay over?
• could  verleden tijd                                    I could stay over.
• may  formeler                                               You may speak.
• to be allowed to  bij alle tijden             I am allowed to stay over.

Wat zijn de verschillen in betekenis?
I have to get up early in the morning - I must get up early in the morning - I should get up early in the morning

have to, must, should: (zou) moeten

have to:  noodzakelijk                                     I have to get up.
must:  noodzakelijk, maar dwingender, of moet van iemand anders, bijv. regel, bevel, ...                       You must leave now.

Het kan niet anders: must                 You must be tired after today.

Advies: should                                                     You should sleep earlier.

Everyone ... exit the building right now since the alarm is going off.
