The Present Simple
Questions

To make a question, you have to put the verb do in front of the sentence:

I like ice cream.     becomes      Do I like ice cream?

If the subject is a he, she or it, you have to use does. Also, look at what happens with the +s of the original verb.

Bob plays football.   becomes   Does Bob play football?

Questions

For the next exercise, turn the sentence into a question. Think about capital letters, questions marks and the SHIT Rule (do/does)!

Slide 13 - Open question

The girls always wear the same halloween costumes.

Slide 14 - Open question

The Present Simple
Questions

The verb 'to be' and 'to have got' are special.
These verbs switch places in a sentence and DON'T need do or does.

She is very beautiful.  becomes  Is she very beautiful?

You have got a break.  becomes  Have you got a break?

Slide 15 - Slide

PART 2

Slide 20 - Slide

The Present Simple
Negations

Now you know how to make questions in the present simple.

Now we are going to look at negative sentences.

Slide 21 - Slide

The Present Simple
Negative sentences

Negative sentences tell you that something is not happening.
You can see the word not in the sentence, but almost always as a short form n't, as in don't or doesn't.

An example of a negation is:

                             She doesn't see very well.

Slide 22 - Slide

The Present Simple
Negative sentence
So you make a negative sentence by adding don't or doesn't to the sentence.

I like ice cream.                becomes                 I don't like ice cream.

If the subject is a he, she or it, you have to use doesn't. Also, look at what happens with the +s of the original verb.

Bob plays football.            becomes               Bob doesn't play football.

Slide 23 - Slide

The Present Simple
Negative sentences

Look at what happens to the verb in this sentence when we turn it into a negative sentence:

He plays video games every day.

He doesn't play video games every day.

The +s disappears after doesn't. The same happened with the questions!

The Present Simple

Negative sentences

In the next exercise, try to turn the normal sentence into a negative sentence. Pay attention to capital letters, full stops and the SHIT Rule.

The girls wear the same witch hats.

Slide 26 - Open question

The boy always eats his candy on halloween.

Slide 27 - Open question

The Present Simple
Negative sentences

Again, the verbs 'to be' and 'to have got' are special.
Very simple, just add not. You don't need doesn't or don't in that case.

I am an English teacher.
I am not an English teacher.
I have got two brothers.
I have not got two brothers.
