After today's lesson, you'll be able to...
  • recognise a present perfect
  • explain how to form a present perfect
  • determine when you can use a present simple, past simple     or present perfect (based on the context of a sentence)

Present simple
  • What is a present simple? 

Slide 6 - Slide

Present simple
  • something always, never, or often happens 
  • typical words: always, never, often, usually, regularly,       sometimes, hardly ever
  • form: verb (+s for he/she/it)

Example: I sing my favourite song every day

Past simple
  • What is a past simple?

Past simple
  • Something happened in the past and...
  • ...it is important when it happened! 
  • Example words: last night, in 2015, this morning (specific  time indication)
  • Form: stem of the verb + -ed (but mind the irregular verbs!)

Example: ​I watched a movie yesterday.

Present perfect
  • Can be used for four different things, but actions in the past have connection to the present
  • Form:  has/have + past participle

1. Something happened in the past, but it's not important when (usually no time indication)

Example: She's given me a really good idea.

2. Something started in the past and it's still going on
(key words: for, in, since)

Example: We've been here since coffee time.

3. Something happened in the past and the result is visible now.

Example: I've done my homework. Here it is.
