Present simple
Hoe maak je de present simple?

Hele werkwoord (zonder to)
Bij he, she, it komt er een -s of -es achter het werkwoord.

I work, she talks, he lives

Present simple
Als het werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker + -y dan vervang je na he, she en it de -y door -ies
  • (to carry) He carries the groceries to the car.
klinker (a, e, i, o en u) + -y.
  •  (to buy) Jeff buys the same shoes every year.
Eindigt het werkwoord op een sisklank, dan zet je -es achter het werkwoord bij he, she en it. 
  •  (to watch) Jane watches the seven o’clock news.

Hoe maak je de past simple?

De standaardregel voor het maken van de past simple is: zet -ed achter het werkwoord.
  • to walk: I walked, you walked, he/she/it walked, we walked, you walked, they walked
  • to jump: I jumped, you jumped, he jumped, …
  • to start: I started, you started, ...

Uitzonderingen:

Verdubbeling medeklinker. Hele ww bestaat uit 1 lettergreep en eindigt op 1 klinker + 1 medeklinker. 
  • to shop - shopped
Verdubbeling medeklinker. Hele ww bestaat uit meer lettergrepen, met de klemtoon op de laatste lettergreep die slechts 1 klinker bevat. 
  • to admit - admitted

na de werkwoorden beginnen, doorgaan of stoppen 
  • I started smoking when I was twenty-one.

na werkwoorden die voorkeur uitdrukken
  • I prefer cycling because I hate driving.

Gerund (ing-vorm als zelfstandig naamwoord)
Je gebruikt de gerund na de volgende werkwoorden: 
admit, avoid, consider, delay, deny, imagine, miss, postpone, practise, put off, risk, suggest

  • I admit having not done enough.
  • You shouldn’t avoid speaking English.
  • Can you imagine living outside Europe?
  • You risk losing your licence the way you’re driving.

Dan zijn er nog vaste uitdrukkingen waarin je de gerund gebruikt. Dat zijn:
