One side will argue from the perspective of Malcolm X, and the other will represent Martin Luther King Jr.

Each side will debate which approach (more militant and assertive vs. peaceful and nonviolent resistance) was more effective during the civil rights movement.

Step 2: Biography Discussion (15 minutes)
Divide the students into small groups and assign each group a different phase of Malcolm X's life:

Early Life: Discuss his troubled childhood, the death of his father, and his involvement in crime, which led to imprisonment.

Nation of Islam Period: Focus on his rise as a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, emphasizing black nationalism and separation.

Post-Hajj Transformation: Highlight his pilgrimage to Mecca, which led him to change his views about race, promoting unity and peace among different races.
Each group can use short excerpts from "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" to guide their discussion. After 10 minutes, have each group present their findings to the class.
