Learning objectives

  • You can name the characteristics of bones and cartilage.

  • You can describe how the composition of bones changes throughout life.

Bone & cartilage
In the nose and ears, there is flexible cartilage.

The rest of your body is mostly made up of bones. Bones break much more easily than cartilage.

Slide 7 - Slide

Bone

Consists of calcium (kalk) and collagen (lijmstof).

Calcium is firm but breaks easily.
Collagen is flexible but strong.

Slide 13 - Slide

answer
The elderly woman is more likely to break a bone because the bones of older people contain less collegen and more calcium than the bones of younger people.
This makes the bones of older people more brittle (fragile), while the bones of younger people are more flexible.
