Present Simple

What do you remember?

When is it used?

1. To talk about facts:
   The sun is hot.
   Water freezes when the temperature is below zero.
2. To talk about habits:
   I do my homework after school.
   My father cooks dinner on Friday.
3. To talk about things that happen with some frequency:
   We go to the Efteling sometimes.
   I never play with my younger brother.

How is it made?

I/you/we/they = verb (werkwoord)

I work at Graaf Engelbrecht.

You like sweets.

He/she/it = verb + s  &  verb + es

Your mother cooks a lot of meals.

His wife catches bugs as a hobby.

The boy goes to school.

How is it made? (2)

+es: words ending in -o and s-sounds

I go - he goes / You kiss - She kisses

+ies: words ending in consonant(medeklinker)+y

We cry - she cries / I study - he studies

+s: all other verbs!

Exercise 1

Fill in the correct form of the verb.

Type only the verb!

Questions and negatives

I/you/we/they = do + subject + verb & subject + do not+ verb

My brothers like cheese. --> Do my brothers like cheese?

The children play videogames. --> The children do not play videogames

He/she/it = does + subject + verb & subject + does not+ verb

She loves Stranger Things. --> Does she love Stranger Things?

Kevin plays football. --> Kevin does not play football.

Exercise 2

Change the sentences to questions (?) or negatives (-)

Type the whole sentence!

Even when your verb is do or does, you still need to add an extra do or does for the questions and negatives!
