Adjectives
  • Give information about a noun 
  • to modify nouns
  • Come before a noun, or after a linking verb or verb of senses 

Adverbs
  • Say something about a verb, adjective, another adverb or a complete sentence.
  • Never used for nouns
  • Say something about the frequency or the way something happened
  • Commonly made by adding -ly to the adjective
linking verbs
  • be
  • become
  • get
  • grow
  • keep
  • remain
  • seem
  • sound
  • stay
  • turn
verb of senses
to look, feel, smell, taste... 

These verbs might change their meaning when used with an adverb.

look good (= appearance) vs. look well (= healthy)
feel good (= state of health/mind) vs.  feel well (= have a good sense of touch)
smell good (= odour) vs. smell well (= have a good sense of smell)
taste good (= preference) vs. taste well (= have a good sense of taste)

before a noun
At the party, they were playing loud music. (adverb + noun)
                                                               
after a linking verb /... of senses.
That is a beautiful painting

Hmm, dinner smells so good!
                                           
Use
  • He talked nervously 
  • He has a remarkably loud voice
  • She laughs very loudly
  • Luckily, she drives carefully.

    adjective:  ends with -ic (fantastic)

EXCEPTIONS
Adverbs that have the same form as the adjective:

early - fast - hard - late - low - straight - daily - weekly - monthly - yearly 

irregular form
good (adj.) - well (adv.)

hardly = nauwelijks
