  • Pre-Colonial Era - Indigenous music - Rituals - Ceremonies
  • Colonial period - Syncretism between Indigenous people, Europeans and African (transatlantic slave trade) 
  • Slaves were forbidden to practice their own culture (music, religion and rituals) It was allowed to play European music and join Catholicism

  • Own music was played to express their own identity and feel connected
