Occupation zones Germany
  • Germany (temporarily) no longer independent
Four occupation zones led by: France, Britain, the Soviet Union and the United States.
Berlin is also divided into 4 zones

Travelling between occupation zones is not a problem.
Don't forget this either: Berlin is in the Soviet Union's occupation zone

Truman doctrine
Stalin (SU)wants to expand his area of influence on both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Truman(US)wants to stop this from happening. 
In the Truman Doctrine of 1947 he states that the United States will organize a military intervention if it seems that country is becoming communist.

Iron curtain
Iron Curtain: a border across Europe that from 1945 to 1989 divided Eruopa into an Eastern Bloc and a Western Bloc (see photo what the Iron Curtain looked like)

Countries in Eastern Europe were not allowed by Soviet Union to accept Marshall Aid

Marshallplan?
Read TVG 6.2.3 the second part and write down:
What was the Marshallplan about?
Write down the four goals why the US started the Marshallplan.

Marshallplan goals:
1. Rebuild European countries.
2. To prevent people to vote for communist parties (they would possibly do so because of how poor they are). 
3. To promote the sales of American products. If Europe is doing better economically, the United States would have a market for their factory products. 
4.  To stimulate European  countries to work together more closely (to prevent a new war).

Stalin forbids the countries in the East to make use of the Marshallplan.  
When the West  introduces its own currency in their part of the German occupation zone, the German Mark, he takes action.

Western occupation zones increasingly unified

Stalin blocks all supply routes to West Berlin to force the city to surrender: Blockade of Berlin

The West starts supplying West Berlin by air: airlift

For a year, a plane lands in West Berlin every 3 minutes
