We use the simple present tense when an action is a habit or when it happens regularly
 
I always buy gum when I fly to the UK for New Years.

Formula: infinitive only!
he/she/it - Add -s or -es (when there is an s sound)

The present continuous tense indicates that an action is happening now and will continue in the future or will happen in the near future.

We are visiting the local museum today.
Rose is reading a book in her hotel.
I am taking the train to my friend tomorrow.

Formula: to be [am, is, are] + verb + -ing
