Past simple and past continuous

Past simple: gebeurtenis afgerond + tijd vaak genoemd; gewoonte uit verleden

• I watched that film yesterday.
• While he was away, he rang his friend every day.

Past continuous: activiteit verleden onderbroken door iets anders; tijdelijke situatie in verleden

• I was cooking dinner when I heard the news.
• I was staying with relatives while my parents were away.

Present perfect (continuous)

Present perfect: onbepaalde / onbelangrijke tijd; nadruk op huidige resultaat en relevantie; met woorden als always, never, yet...

• David has (already) phoned me three times today.
• Someone has stolen my wallet!

Present perfect continuous: nadruk op activiteit i.p.v. resultaat; nadruk op tijdsduur activiteit

• I have been speaking on the phone for hours now.

Past perfect (continuous)

Past perfect: gebeurtenis vond plaats vóór een andere gebeurtenis; vaak met when, as soon as, after, before

• When I got home, my brother had cooked dinner already.

Past perfect continuous: nadruk op de tijdsduur; aangeven hoe lang iets plaatsvond tot aan een bepaald punt in verleden

• I was tired because I had been studying for hours.
• We had been saving money for years before we could afford the vacation.
