We use comparative adjectives to compare people, things, or places.

We add the word ‘than’ to show it is a comparison:

____ is [adjective] than _____.

Superlative Adjectives

We use superlative adjectives to say that something is at the minimum or maximum of an adjective.

We add the word 'the' before a superlative:

The [adjective] ____.

Making Superlative Adjectives

Short adjectives:

Adjective + -est

strong -> strongest

I am the strongest person in the class.

Making Superlative Adjectives

Short adjectives ending in -e:

Adjective + -st

cute -> cutest

My sister is the cutest baby ever.

Making Superlative Adjectives

Short adjectives ending in a vowel (klinker) + consonant (medeklinker):

Double final consonant + -est

big -> biggest

That is the biggest hamburger I have ever seen.

Adjectives ending in -y:

Remove -y, add -iest

Friendly -> friendliest

He is the friendliest person I know.

Most + adjective

intelligent -> most intelligent

She is the most intelligent person I've met.

Irregular adjectives:

good-> best

This is the best song ever!

bad -> worst

This is the worst day of my life.
