Conditionals

Slide 4 - Slide

Conditionals
Conditionals, also  called if sentences, talk about things that need to happen for something else to happen.

If this, then that

Slide 5 - Slide

1st, 2nd and 3rd conditional
We'll focus on three conditionals;

1st: If you kick me, I will kick you.
2nd: If you kicked me, I would kick you
3rd: If you had kicked me, I would have kicked you

Slide 6 - Slide

1st, 2nd and 3rd conditional
1st: If you kick me, I will kick you.

2nd: If you kicked me, I would kick you

3rd: If you had kicked me, I would have kicked you

Slide 7 - Slide

2nd exception
In the if-clause of the second conditional, we always use were (never was).

If I were you, I would write this down.

Slide 8 - Slide

Mixed
We can also mix the 2nd and 3rd conditionals:

If I had done my work in class, I wouldn't have to stress now.

If I were a little richer, I would have bought a house.

Slide 9 - Slide

Modals
We can use other modal verbs in the main clause, especially can, could, may and might.

I might be interested if you showed me what I have to do

If I had bought a new computer, I could play that new game!
