Slide 12 - Open question

Poverty has a big effect on Junior's life. It affected the quality of education he received on the Rez. They had to use very old books, which even his mother had used. Also because of a lack of money he is unable to get to school some days, or he has to walk, which leaves him very tired. Finally because of poverty Junior’s father has to shoot the dog as they have no money for the vet.

Explain why Junior cries tears of shame after winning the basketball game? (2p)

Slide 14 - Open question

Junior cries tears of shame after winning the basketball match because he feels awful/terrible /ashamed about what he has done to his people. He realises that the Reardan team has more advantages (money, good schools and more support) and by winning the game he has taken away the one thing that the Wellpinit team could have been successful in.

Slide 15 - Slide

Explain the title of the novel. Use examples in your answer.

Slide 16 - Open question

The title shows Junior's conflict. He is living between two worlds. On the reservation, he is known as Junior, and he identifies with the Native Americans. At Reardan he is called Arnold and has to fit into the “white” culture there . He doesn’t feel that he is completely indian anymore.

Slide 17 - Slide

Explain the similarities and differences between Junior and Penelope. Provide two examples for each aspect. (4p)

Slide 18 - Open question

Junior and Penelope differ in a number of ways: Penelope is a white girl who leaves in a wealthier environment than Junior, who is poor and lives on the reservation. Penelope has a strict, racist father who doesn’t show Penelope any love. In the book it’s clear that Junior’s parents love and support him. This is clear when they help him change schools.
However they are also similar in a number of ways. Both characters have an internal conflict/struggle. Junior struggles because he feels that he doesn’t really belong on the reservation or at the white school. Penelope struggles with her image and  the expectations of her environment and this is shown through her struggle with bulimia
Both Junior and Penelope want to achieve great things and be remembered. Penelope wants to be an architect and Junior wants to escape the reservation and do something big that people will remember him for.
