• Lots of countries started colonies in the New World
• Most of Northern America's east becomes a British colony. 
• Many Europeans travelled to those colonies

America after Columbus

• many immigrants from different countries in the colonies
• Most of them had no connection with Great Britain
• When the British government imposed new taxes in  1763, that caused much anger and protests

• 1773: angry colonists (patriots) started throwing tea overboard
• That made the British very angry - harsh measures
• April 1775: first battle (in Boston) of the American Revolution

• The newly formed Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776 
• Written by Thomas Jefferson
• Signed by Founding Fathers ( Hamilton en Washington)
• Partly inspired by ideals from Enlightenment

• many battles followed after the Declaration
• Colonists received help from the Dutch and French - why?
• British defeated in 1783

• The states became more democratic and formed a federation
• 1789: The Constitution included the "Bill of Rights" describing the individual rights of citizens and limiting the power of the government
