Om te zeggen dat iets niet zo was, zet je not of n't achter was/were.

I wasn't/ was not home at 12 o'clock.

Je gebruikt didn't + het hele werkwoord om aan te geven dat iets niet gedaan of gebeurd is. 

We didn't have a look at the animals.
