Chapter 3: Energy transition
§3.2  World: The transition to sustainable energy sources

Slide 1 - Slide

goals
- You know what the most important traditional energy sources are and you know that the energy consumption per capita and the carbon footprint increased explosively for years.
- You understand why traditional energy sources are not sustainable and why an energy transition is needed.
- You can use a cross-section to decide whether natural gas and crude oil extractions are possible with conventional techniques.

Slide 2 - Slide

Non-renewable energy sources. :

  • fossil fuels
  • shale gas
  • Nuclear energy? potential lack of uranium
 renewable energy sources

  • solar energy
  • wind energy
  • hydro- electricity
  • Biomass
  • Bio-ethanol

Slide 5 - Open question

correct words: Is there would be no natural/enhanced greenhouse effect earth would be too: warm/cold
A
enhanced cold
B
enhanced warm
C
natural cold
D
natural warm

Slide 6 - Quiz

natural greenhouse effect
enhanced greenhouse effect
water vapour via evaporation
Carbon dioxide from decomposition of organic material
Methane from swamps and peats

Slide 7 - Drag question

Why is this glacier wrapped in a white cloth?
A
It has the same color as the glacier itself and the effect is better.
B
White reflects sunlight so the glacier below doesn't melt.
C
White absorbs, so the cloth heats up and the glacier underneath doesn't melt.
D
So that the people cannot walk directly on the glacier and it does not melt quickly

Slide 9 - Video

1: The richest 1 percent of the population emits as much co2 as the poorest half of the world's population.
2: Due to the warming of the sea, the Netherlands has to deal with more heavy rainfall.
A
1 and 2 are true
B
1 and 2 are not true
C
1 is true, 2 is not true
D
1 is not true, 2 is true

Traditional energy sources
Fossil fuels: old plant or animal materials
-coal
-oil
-gas

Major downsides:
-they will run out
-they emit a lot of greenhouse gasses

Slide 14 - Slide

Traditional energy sources
  •  Conventional gas and oil: olil and gas which is easily accesible
  • sometimes you have to work a bit harder to get oil and gas out of the ground: tar sand and shale gas
  • This makes this oil or gas more expensive
  • Nuclear energy:upside: does not emit greenhouse gasses, downside: if it goes wrong....

Slide 15 - Slide

Transition to renewable energy

  • For years our ecological footprint has been rising due to growing prosperity worldwide and a growing population on the planet
  • This made it clear we need to stop using traditional fossil fuel and move towards renewable energy sources> energy transition

Slide 16 - Slide

Would you be in favour of having nuclear energy in the Netherlands?
