Wolves in the Netherlands

Slide 17 - Slide

History
  • Year 1881 last wolf killed in the Netherlands
  • Year 1982 European protection laws for wolves
  • First new sightings in 2015

Slide 18 - Slide

Slide 19 - Link

Nowadays
  • 30-35 wolves in the Netherlands (without roaming wolves)
  • 4 wolfpacks in the bigger reserves

Slide 20 - Slide

But we have a problem.....
  • In the Netherlands we have a lot of sheep farmers located near nature reserves
  • Farmers are not used to wolves and sheep are not well protected
  • Sheep get killed a lot
  • Farmers have economical and mental problems because of the wolves
  • Government tries to help by providing money when sheep are killed and for good fences
  • Lot's of farmers are not happy with the wolf despite the government actions. They want the wolf out of the landscape
  • On the other hand: lot's of other people see the wolf as a welcome animal that came by itself and we as people should just deal with it
  • So discussions all over!
