Eén dier of één persoon: (enkelvoud)

Als een woord op een -s eindigt in het meervoud, dan krijg je een ' (hoge komma/apostrof)

-My sisters' cars were bought at that dealer over there.
- My friends' ideas are quite good actually. 
Dus niet: My sisters's cars......
Als een woord niet op een -s eindigt in het meervoud, dan krijg je wél een 's. 
- The children's toys were lying all over the floor.
- The people's stolen belongings were delivered by the police officer.

- The roof of the building was damaged. (het dak van het gebouw)

Bij geografische locaties
- The capital of Switzerland is Bern. (de hoofdstad van Zwitserland)
- The City of Kampen is well-known for its beautiful architecture. (de stad Kampen -> lastig vertalen van NL-ENG)
