Lesson objectives

• You know what inventions made exploration possible. 
• You know which country was the first to start exploring.
• You know how Spain discovered America.

New inventions.

• Ships were build better, but sailers also used "new" navagational tools.
• The quadrant was used to measure distance.
•   The backstaff was used to figure out your position using the sun.

The sea route

• Portugal was the first state that tried to find a way to Asia.
• Henry (the Navigator) wanted to find a sea route, and not use the Silk Road. 
• He needed a new, strong ship. The carvel was designed.

Found!

• In 1498 a sailer from Portugal found a route to Asia.
• After a few struggles, the Portugese started trading spices.

Columbus

• The Portugese earned a lot of money.
• Christopher Columbus was an Italian merchant. He had a plan to go to India, but not through the east but through the west.
• No one wanted to give him money exept the Spaninsh King Ferdinand II of Aragon.

He "discovered" America, but he first thought he was in India.

• Do 6.1 exercise 4 till 10 on page 87 to 90,  in pairs or in a group of three. You can quietly discus with the person next to you
