Slide 1 - Slide

When you heard you had to read a book in English this week, how did you feel?
😒🙁😐🙂😃

Slide 2 - Poll

OK... on a scale of 1 to 10, how motivated are you
to read a book in English?
(1 = not motivated at all; 10 = very motivated)

Slide 3 - Poll

Tip
Don't assume that reading is boring or a
waste of time... give it a chance and you might discover that it is actually
quite relaxing and cool.  No (mobile) screen in your face, no constant
interruptions with nonsense messages, just some "me" time...

Did you know that reading is the best way to improve your (English) language skills!  No grammar rules... just pure pleasure and hopefully, a great story that will take you into another world!

Reading Log / Book Project - HV2
The tasks
What do I have to do while reading the book?

The task consists of three parts:

  1. Emotions chart
You will keep track while reading and fill it in during class/at home
  2. Moodboard
You will collect pictures that match the setting/context while reading
  3. Presentation
After finishing the book you will use the emotions chart and
moodboard to present the story of your book

Slide 5 - Slide

Goals - What should I be able to do during/at the end of this assignment?

1.  I can recognize when an emotion is being described and I understood which emotion this is
2. I can place the book/story in the context and visualize what the surroundings look like
3. I can recognize the storyline and retell it in my own words so that the listener can also understand it
4. I can read undisturbed for at least 15 minutes during a lesson
5. I can plan a moment three times a week at home with no electronic devices in order to read my book for at least 30 minutes

Slide 7 - Slide

First things first...
Write the title & author of the book you've chosen
(if you have already made a choice)

Slide 8 - Open question

If you have already chosen a book, did you send your book choice via the Microsoft Forms link already?
A
Yes
B
No

Slide 9 - Quiz

If you have chosen a book, what is the genre of your book?
If you have not chosen a book yet, what kind of genre
are you interested in?
...romance, action, detective, mystery, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, humor, biography, autobiography, thriller, adventure…

Slide 10 - Open question

Tip
When you think you have found a good and
interesting book, read 2-3 pages to see if the level of English is OK for you.  It shouldn't be too hard, but it shouldn't be too easy either...
And remember, you don't have to understand every single word on a page...

Slide 11 - Slide

True or False...
The teacher has to approve your
book before you start reading.
A
True
B
False

Slide 12 - Quiz

Good book checklist:
  • You like the topic/genre of the book
  • The book is not too difficult (but also not too easy!)

If your book doesn't check both of these requirements, consider getting a different book.

Where and how to read

timer
3:00
What do you think
is a good reading setting (a good place to read a book)?

Slide 15 - Mind map

Reading setting
  • Go offline, put your electronic devices away
  • Set a timer
  • Read together with a friend maybe?
  • Create a cozy setting

Tip: See if there is an audio version of
your book. It may help to listen while reading.

Slide 16 - Slide

Think about a setting for yourself (at home or at school). You will read at least 3 times a week for 30 minutes without your phone/laptop. What moment will you pick and where will you sit?

Slide 17 - Open question

Reading moments
Write the three reading moments you've decided on
in your agenda / SomToday / iCal.

Slide 18 - Slide

Planning is important!
Make a schedule of how many chapters or pages you are going to read per week.

You should be about halfway through your book by Tuesday, November 26th.  That is the first deadline to hand in your Emotions Chart (it does not have to be complete yet!)

Slide 19 - Slide

Remember to bring your book to
every class. You will get about 15-20 minutes of reading time at the beginning of some lessons (not all).
