When do you use the Past Continuous?

1) to set a scene.  
The sun was shining and the birds were singing. 

2) to describe an action which was in progress (bezig) when another action interrupted (onderbreking) it. 
While we were staying at the campsite, somebody stole Fiona's camera.

When do you use the Past Perfect?

1) to describe an event which happened before another event in the past.
I wasn't hungry because I had already eaten lunch. 
I couldn't do the test  because I hadn't studied for it. 
She had seen that film before she went on a date to the cinema with Josh.

Dus: 

Past simple: 
-> afgeronde actie in het verleden (zonder uitgebreide beschrijving)
-> opsomming van dingen die elkaar opvolgen
-> interruptie (in combinatie met past continuous)

Past Continuous:
-> soort scene/verhaal uit het verleden (uitgebreide beschrijving)
-> een actie die bezig is in het verleden terwijl die die wordt onderbroken (door een interruptie)

Past Perfect:
-> een actie/gebeurtenis in het verleden die vóór een andere actie in het verleden heeft plaatsgevonden.
