Last week we talked about the present perfect.

Talk to a classmate and write down 3 things you remember about it.

Grammar: modal verbs

What are modal verbs?

Modal verbs zijn hulpwerkwoorden

Kenmerken:

- ze staan altijd samen met een ander w.w. in de zin

- ze veranderen niet van vorm

- Je mag ze vóóraan zetten om een vraag te maken

1. can

• Can = kunnen of mogen
• Achter can komt altijd het hele w.w.
• Can kun je alleen in de present simple gebruiken.

Sarah can play the piano really well. 

Ms Jones said that I can hand in the assignment later. 

Negative

Can has 2 negative forms: can't and cannot (let op: geen spatie!) Meestal gebruik je can't. 

Can you come to my house on Saturday?

No, I can't. 

I cannot believe he told you that!

2. Could

• Could = de verleden tijd van can
• Could is ook een beleefdsheidsvorm (zou kunnen/zou mogen)
• Je spreekt de -l niet uit 

Could you please help me with that? 

There was nothing we could do about it. 

3. to be able to

• To be able to = kunnen/in staat zijn om
• De vorm van to be moet je aanpassen aan de zin.
• daardoor kun je het in alle tijden gebruiken

I won't be able to make it on time tonight. 

She wasn't able to walk after the accident. 

I have never been able to do a backflip. 

4. To be allowed to

• To be allowed to = mogen/toestemming krijgen/toestaan
• De vorm van to be moet je aanpassen aan de zin.
  
• daardoor kun je het in alle tijden gebruiken

It's not allowed to smoke inside.

They weren't allowed to go out last Saturday. 

The dog is not allowed to sit on the sofa.
