Active vs. passive
The culprit was arrested by the police after he had damaged the lift at Dieren station.
The police charged him with vandalism.  He is being interviewed about his actions. In the meantime, the police are conducting interviews with witnesses as well. After the interviews they will decide on a verdict. 

  • Which of the verbs are in active voice? 
  • What is the difference between the active and the passive voice?

  • Active voice= wanneer de focus ligt op degene die de actie uitvoert. 
He committed a crime. 

  • Passive voice= wanneer het niet duidelijk is wie de actie heeft uitgevoerd of niet belangrijk is. 
A crime was committed. (by him).

  3. They have finished cleaning up.  

  • De vorm van de passive voice= wat de actie ondergaat wordt het onderwerp (vooraan in de zin) + een vorm van "to be" + voltooid deelwoord.
