Employers Liability Insurance 
Employers are responsible for health and safety of their staff by law
The employer’s liability insurance is compulsory and covers contracted staff and apprentices
The contract can be written or verbal

Public Liability Insurance 
This insurance covers claims made by members of the public, but not employees
This insurance is compulsory when dealing with the public, and is especially relevant in a salon environment
If a client injures themselves on the premises or is injured by a member of staff during the a service then they can make a claim through the salons public liability insurance

Employers Liability Insurance 
Who it covers….
The insurance covers existing employees who suffer an injury or illness associated with their work, such as an allergic reaction or has a trip or fall
It also covers employees who have left the salon and become ill at a later date if they believe this was caused by their work in the salon

Employers Liability Insurance 
A employer must have employer’s liability insurance if:
They deduct National Insurance and Income Tax from the money they pay you
They have the right to control where and when you work
They supply work materials and equipment
They have the right to any profit you make- this could include commission
You are treated the same way as other employees- e.g. doing the same work under the same conditions as someone else

Product and Treatment Liability Insurance 
This insurance protects the employer against claims for injury or damaged caused by the treatments carried out in the salon and that are sold. Even if you are not negligent, you may still be held liable for injuries suffered. 
If you do not skin test a client prior to colouring and they suffer an allergic reaction resulting in the claim being made against the salon- under this insurance the employer and employee are protected.
REMEMBER: you are working in an industry where compensation claims are a regular occurrence!!!!!!!!

Data Protection
Salons hold records of clients personal data. Under the data protection act it is an offence to give out personal information to a third party, either knowingly or unknowingly. 
All staff should ensure clients personal information is not accessible by following guidelines which will be put in place by employers. This should include a locked draw for record cards to be stored, or a password protected computer system

Stock displays
Most salons will have a display of styling and finishing products and electrical equipment for sale, making them an easy target for opportunist thieves. 
These displays could be in reception, or around the salon.

Personal belongings
Staff and clients will bring personal belongings into a salon, including purses, bags and phones. 
When salons are busy it would be easy to walk into a salon and take a purse from an unattended bag, or walk into a staffroom and take something.

Reception
Receptions are busy areas and are not always manned so are easy targets when it comes to opportunist thieves. It would be easy to take a product from a shelf without being noticed.
The reception is also where the till is kept!!!!
A lot of stylists will have tip tins to save tips given from their clients. These are often kept on reception and so would easy to take quickly if reception were unmanned.
Clients coats are generally stored at reception too!!

Good security practices...
  • Never keep large amounts of money in the till
  • Keep the till locked and reception manned
  • Keep tip boxes out of site
  • Ask clients to remove valuables from their coats
  • Make sure clients keep their bags with them at all times
  • Staff should have lockers to store personal belongings in
  • Do not leave valuables in the salon overnight
  • Only have dummy boxes in windows to display expensive styling equipment, and remove from the windows overnight!!!!
  • Double check all windows and doors are locked at night. Have a checklist if needed to ensure all are closed
