Past simple vs Past continuous
De past simple en past continuous worden vaak samen in een zin gebruikt, waarin de continuous aangeeft wat langer duurt en de past simple de korte actie aangeeft:
We were watching a movie when the phone rang.
He was walking to school when the accident happened.

and, after....while...
Staat er 'after' of 'and' in de zin, komt er een opeenvolging waar je dezelfde tijd, meestal een past simple, gebruikt:
The tea splashed on the TV and caused a big bang.
After I left school I went to the gym.

Staat er 'while' doe je dit ook, meestal is dit dan een past continuous:
My dad was washing the car while my mother was cooking dinner.
