Basic 6.3 : Fertilization

6.3. Goals

- I know the difference between pollination and fertilization, (how they happen and the correct sequence).

- I can recognize parts of seeds

Pollen tube

When a pollen grain lands on the stigma of a plant of the same species, a tube starts to grow from it: the pollen tube. 

The pollen tube grows down the style to the ovule in the ovary.

The nucleus (DNA) of the pollen grain goes through the pollen tube to the ovule.

Fertilization

On reaching the ovule, the tip of the pollen tube breaks open.. 

DNA fuses = fertilization 

---> first new plant cell,  with surrounding ovule becomes a seed 

Each seed contains
a germ or ‘plant embryo’. 

When a seed germinates*, the plant embryo grows into a seedling.

Kieming

• In de zaad zit een kiem. Wanneer er uit het kiem een klein kiemplantje groeit spreek je over kieming.
  
  
• Wat is de functie van zaadlobben?
  
• =reservevoedsel voor kiemplantje

Na de bevruchting gaan de bevruchte eicel, het zaadbeginsel en het vruchtbeginsel groeien. 

1.Uit de bevruchte eicel ontstaat een kiem. 

2. Uit het zaadbeginsel ontstaat een zaad. 

3. Elk zaad bevat één kiem.
