Can wordt gebruikt om te praten over mogelijkheden, om verzoeken te doen en om toestemming te vragen. 

Can I go to the bathroom? 

He can play chess. 

To be able to wordt gebruikt om te zeggen dat je in staat bent iets te doen. 

am/is/are able to 

I am able to solve the problem. 

Modals

Could is de verleden tijd vorm van can, maar ook een beleefheidsvorm. Als je een vraag stelt aan een volwassene gebruik je deze vaak ook. 

Het wordt ook gebruikt om uit te drukken dat iets waarschijnlijk gebeurt in de toekomst, maar geen zekerheid heeft.

Must en have drukken beiden noodzaak uit. 

Must = noodzaak vanuit de spreker.   Have = noodzaak vanuit iemand anders. 

Should gebruik je om advies te geven, een suggestie te doen of te zeggen dat iets juist is om te doen.

We should see the doctor.
