But why?

Because pollution is an uncountable noun

You can not say: 1,2 or 3 pollution

How many people are there?

How much people are there?

Correct answer

How many people are there?

How much people are there?

But why?

Because people is a countable noun (plural of person)

You can say: there were 1,2 or 3 people there.
