Who, What, Where
Marres, House for Contemporary Culture is the house for contemporary culture in Maastricht. With a broad programme of exhibitions and education and a variety of events and activities, Marres hopes to be a social meeting place for everyone.

You will follow a social service trajectory of several weeks. During this trajectory, you reflect on who you are, what you find important and how you can use your qualities, knowledge and character to make the world a more beautiful place.

Art can help you do this. How? You are about to find out!

Where were we?
To be a changemaker, you sometimes have to explore new ways and paths. Thinking and acting creatively to effect change. Contemporary artists often do this by making their art. Looking at art allows you to explore different perspectives. That's what you are going to learn now.

Your turn!
Choose a card with a profession on it.
Try to empathise a little with this profession - what do you do if you are a GP, archaeologist, or gardener?

Then look at the following picture of a work of art and try to respond to the work of art from the perspective of this profession.

Perspectives
For whom do you want to make a change in society? What do you actually know about this target group and can you empathise with their way of looking and moving?

Projectmanagement
Do it yourself
Choose an artwork from the examples, but do not discuss it with each other.

Translate this artwork into a movement. Can other students guess which artwork you chose in response to your movement. What makes them recognise it, or not?

You often recognise a person from a distance because of the way they move. How does the target audience you have chosen move?

And now...?

Make a character sketch of an artwork, choose from the images given earlier.

Have a conversation

On the basis of the character sketch you have made, you engage in a short conversation, a kind of speed-date. There are two roles here; 1 person may ask questions about the character the other person has to tell.
After 10 minutes, swap roles.

Make sure that the person asking questions really only gets to ask and listen. The other person narrates.

Doing great!
.... now what does this have to do with your changemakers program?

Have a conversation with each other about the target group you have chosen. Also try to look at this from a different perspective. Make a character sketch of your target group and move like you think your target group moves.

What did you find out about the target group
from a different perspective ?

GOOD JOB!
We have come to the end of this lesson. You are another step closer to becoming a Changemaker.
Good job! Until next time,

Team Changemakers!

SAMENWERKING
Ook wij werken samen met fijne partners en organisaties. Voor deze digiles willen wij Marres bedanken voor de samenwerking!

Something extra?
Sometimes artists are seen as ‘rebels’. People who give a different perspective on society and culture and thus pose a threat to a country.
For example, a well-known Chinese artist Ai Weiwei can no longer travel to his home country because of his art.

Take a look at the images of the artworks. What if this work was in another country and culture, what would the reactions be?

Slide 19 - Slide

Something extra?
Artists look at society in their own way.
Search the internet for an artist who has portrayed the target group you want to do something for.

Also consider a musician, dancer or theatre-maker.

Slide 20 - Slide

Something extra?
Once you have found examples of artists, create your own artwork to go with the target group, or for the target group's living space.

You can also think of your own dance, music or theatre piece.
This piece of art can inspire your own social action. Or maybe your artwork is the social action!
