today''s program

review par. 4.5, homework check

learning objectives:
  • what is cleavage and where does it take place?
  • what is implantation and why is this process needed for a healthy embryo to form?
  • what structures are there to nourish and support the developing foetus?

Slide 2 - Slide

how to answer 'explain' questions
-> the question is most of the time : cause-->effect
-> the answer is based on facts that needs be combined in order to come to a conclusion

cause = facts
effect= conclusion (=confirmation of the question)

Slide 3 - Slide

3. Why is it sufficient for only the head of the sperm cell to enter the egg cell?
--> Facts:
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of sperm and egg cell
The head of the sperm cell contains the nucleus

Explanation?

--> Conclusion:
It is sufficient for only the head of the sperm cell to enter the egg cell

3. Why is it sufficient for only the head of the sperm cell to enter the egg cell?
--> Facts:
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of sperm and egg cell
Fertilisation is the fusion of hereditary information from both parents
The head of the sperm cell contains the nucleus
Explanation:
In order to combine the hereditary information of both parents the fusion of the nuclei of the egg and sperm cell is necessary. As the nucleus of the sperm cell is in the head, no other parts of the sperm cell need to enter the egg cell
--> Conclusion:
It is sufficient for only the head of the sperm cell to enter the egg cell

Slide 14 - Quiz

implantation

The process of the embryo attaching to and implanting into the endometrium.
