• I was walking to work this morning when I was seeing Mr Gonzalez, my old Spanish teacher.

• I was walking (past continuous) to work this morning when I saw (past simple) Mr Gonzalez, my old Spanish teacher. 

• He was wearing a leather jacket and carrying a guitar. I ask him how he was.

• He was wearing (past continuous) a leather jacket and carrying a guitar. I asked (past simple) him how he was.

• He said, 'Fine. I go to my band practice.'

• He said, 'Fine. I am going  (present continuous) to my band practice.'
