 Questions in the present simple
Make a question in the present simple by:
  • looking at the verb (=werkwoord)
  • does it belong to the verb 'to be' - then you can make a question with this verb
  • does it belong to the verb 'to have' then check if it is the main verb (= zelfstandig werkwoord) or an auxiliary verb (= hulpwerkwoord) - if it's an auxiliary verb use this verb

Examples:
1) They are friends. - Are they friends? ('to be')
2) She is a teacher. - Is she a teacher? ('to be')
3) We have got tickets for the concert. - Have we got tickets for the concert? ('have' is an auxiliary verb (= hulpwerkwoord)
4) He has been a fan of Arsenal for many years now. - Has he been a fan of Arsenal for many years now? (have = auxiliary)

Questions in the present simple
What if the verb doesn't belong to 'to be', or 'have/has' is not an auxiliary?
  • use 'do' or 'does' + infinitive (= hele werkwoord)

Examples:
He studies abroad. - Does he study abroad?
They love pizza. - Do they love pizza?

Questions in the present simple
When the verb is a modal verb (= hulpwerkwoord) use that verb. Modals are: can / could, shall / should, will / would, must, may / might, ought to.

Examples:
He can sing very well. - Can he sing very well?
We must do what he says. - Must we do what he says?

Do exercises 4 and 5 on pages 123/124 in your WB. Write the answers in your notebook.

Negations in the present simple
The rules on how to make questions in the present simple also apply to how to make negations (= ontkenningen).
Examples:
He reads a book. - He doesn't read a book.
Lara is fed up with maths. - Lara isn't fed up with maths.
We can order books online. - We can't order books online.
You are being silly. - You aren't being silly.
